What is Soundwave?

Soundwave is an open-source speech understanding model developed by the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, focusing on intelligent alignment and understanding of speech and text. Through innovative alignment and compression adapter technologies, it effectively addresses the differences in representation spaces between speech and text, achieving efficient speech feature compression and enabling better handling of speech tasks.

Soundwave's main functions

  • Voice and text alignmentSoundwave can accurately align speech signals with text. By designing alignment and compression adapters, it converts audio sequences into a representation space that large models can understand, while dynamically compressing the length of the speech sequence to match the text.
  • Voice translationThe model performs exceptionally well in speech translation tasks, capable of translating speech input in one language into text or speech output in another language. It possesses efficient alignment capabilities and strong language understanding abilities.
  • Voice Q&ASoundwave supports voice Q&A functionality, allowing users to ask questions via voice, and the model can understand the questions and answer them in voice or text form.
  • Voice emotion recognitionSoundwave can recognize emotional information in speech. By analyzing features such as pitch, speed, and intensity, it can determine the speaker's emotional state (such as happiness, sadness, anger, etc.).

Soundwave's technical principles

  • Voice and text alignmentThis approach achieves speech and text alignment by designing an alignment adapter and using CTC loss. The alignment adapter consists of a linear layer and a single-layer Transformer Encoder layer, which transforms the audio sequence into a representation space that a large model can understand, ensuring that speech and text can interact within the same representation space.
  • Speech feature compressionIn this stage, the model dynamically compresses the length of the speech sequence using a shrinking adapter to match it with text. First, semantic features are selected based on the peaks predicted by CTC. Then, auxiliary information (such as paralinguistic information) is queried and collected from the original sequence based on these features. Finally, these two types of features are fused to reduce the sequence length.
  • Supervision and fine-tuningDuring the fine-tuning phase, the model only adjusts the LoRA parameters, improving task processing capabilities based on text and speech command data. Through learning various question-answering formats, speech tasks, and command formats, the model enhances its command compliance and speech understanding abilities.
