SocraticLM is an innovative AI model for teaching mathematics using the Socratic method. Developed jointly by the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and iFlytek, it employs a "Thought-Provoking" teaching paradigm, guiding students to actively think and solve problems through questioning. SocraticLM was fine-tuned on the SocraTeach dataset, which contains 35,000 carefully designed multi-turn teaching dialogues simulating real-world teaching scenarios. Experimental results show that SocraticLM significantly outperforms GPT-4 in teaching performance, improving overall quality by 12%. The model also includes a comprehensive evaluation system with five teaching dimensions to fully assess the teaching quality of large-scale language models. The development of SocraticLM not only improves teaching effectiveness but also provides new ideas for the development of educational technology.
