What is RegionDrag?

RegionDrag is a region-based image editing technology jointly developed by the University of Hong Kong and the University of Oxford. Based on a diffusion model, it allows users to define handle and target regions to express their editing intentions, enabling fast and precise image editing. It is faster than traditional point-drag editing, reducing computation time and improving the intuitiveness and accuracy of editing. RegionDrag completes the editing in a single iteration, improving efficiency, and employs attention-swapping technology to enhance stability, making image editing more than 100 times faster than existing technologies while maintaining high-quality output.

The technical principle of RegionDrag

  • Region Selection and Definition:Users specify editing operations by defining a handle area and a target area. The handle area is the part the user wants to edit, while the target area is the location where the edited content should appear.
  • diffusion model:RegionDrag, based on a diffusion model, generates images by progressively adding and removing noise. It provides a natural and coherent way to modify image content in image editing.
  • Copying and pasting of latent representations:During the editing process, the latent representation of the image is first reversed to the midpoint of the diffusion process. Then, the latent representation of the handle region is copied and pasted into the target region, thus achieving the editing effect.
  • Attention-swapping technology:To enhance editing stability, RegionDrag employs attention-swapping technology. By exchanging key information within the self-attention module, it helps maintain the consistency of image features, preserving the naturalness and coherence of the image during the editing process.
