What is Origin?

Origin is an AI-native code hosting platform launched by Cursor, designed specifically for the Agent era. The platform provides core functionalities such as Git repository management, PR review and merging, and two-way synchronization with GitHub. It pioneered Agent-native features such as stacked PRs, AI-automated conflict merging, and machine-readable review status. Built from scratch using NVMe + S3 + global replicas, Origin supports high-concurrency operations such as 22 commits per second. Currently in Beta, it is available to Cursor paid users and will coexist with GitHub in the short term, with the long-term goal of becoming the code infrastructure for the Agent era.

Origin's main functions

  • Code repository managementIt supports creating and managing code repositories on a web interface, providing standard Git cloning, pushing, and pulling operations.
  • GitHub two-way synchronizationIt can mirror GitHub repositories with one click and synchronize them bidirectionally in real time, and can also disconnect at any time to make Origin an independent and authoritative data source.
  • Stacked PRBreak down large changes into multiple smaller PRs with dependencies and display them in a visual dependency graph for easy review by agents and humans.
  • Merge queueAutomatically sorts multiple pull requests, performs conflict detection and CI verification, and automatically resolves complex conflicts using AI.
  • Machine-readable review statusThe review results are presented in a structured API format, enabling the Agent to query and read/write directly without parsing natural language.
  • Application ecosystem integrationIt has been integrated with Vercel (preview deployment), Depot, and Buildkite (CI), and supports running existing GitHub Actions workflows.
  • Ask Cursor IntegrationIn the PR review interface, you can directly select a code snippet and ask the AI questions or request a line-by-line explanation.
  • High-performance infrastructureBuilt from scratch based on NVMe+S3+global replica, it supports 22 commits per second and a global synchronization latency of less than 400ms.

How to use Origin

  • PrerequisitesConfirm that your Cursor account is on a Pro, Teams, or Enterprise paid plan, and wait for the Origin feature to be rolled out in stages.
  • Enable OriginVisit the Origin website https://cursor.com/codebase and click "Quick Start" to claim your codebase name and activate Origin.
  • Creating and pushing repositoriesTo create a repository, click "+ New" on the Codebase tab. The page will automatically display the CLI installation commands and instructions for pushing your local project. Install the Origin CLI in your local terminal, and then execute commands to clone or push your local project to the Origin repository.
  • Sync GitHub repositoryTo migrate an existing project, connect your GitHub account and select the target repository. Origin will then synchronize the code and PR comments in real time.
  • Review and merge codeOpen the PR in the repository to view the timeline and file changes, review the diff, add comments, and merge the code directly.
  • Integrating third-party applicationsGo to the Apps tab in your repository and install Vercel, Depot, or Buildkite to enable preview deployments and CI workflows.
  • Configure permissions and rulesConfigure access permissions, branch protection rules, and merge methods (merge commit or squash) in the repository settings.

Origin's core advantages

  • Agent native architectureThe protocol and infrastructure are designed entirely for high-frequency concurrent operations of AI agents.
  • Stacked PRThis feature breaks down large batches of changes generated by the Agent into smaller, dependent PRs and makes them visible, completely solving the difficulty of human review caused by excessive changes in a single PR.
  • Intelligent merge queueAutomatically sorts PRs submitted by multiple agents, detects conflicts and verifies CI. When encountering complex cross-file conflicts, AI automatically resolves them without human intervention.
  • Machine-readable review statusReplace traditional text comments with a structured API, enabling the Agent to directly query and read/write review results without parsing natural language.
  • Ultimate performanceBuilt from scratch based on NVMe+S3+global replicas, it supports 22 commits per second and a global synchronization latency of less than 400ms, and can handle the operational pressure of Agent scale.
  • Cursor Deepin IntegrationThe code repository, PR review, and AI Agent are all centralized on the same platform. The Agent can directly modify code, update PRs, and push branches without having to switch between platforms.

Comparison of Origin's similar products

Comparison Dimensions Origin GitHub
Core positioning A Git hosting platform designed from scratch for the AI Agent era A general-purpose code hosting platform for human developers that has evolved over 18 years.
PR Workflow Stacked PRs: Large changes are broken down into smaller PRs with dependencies, and a dependency graph is visualized. Flat list-style PR: A single PR contains all changes, which makes review difficult when the number of changes is large.
Merger mechanism The merge queue features automatic sorting, conflict detection, and CI verification; complex conflicts are automatically resolved by AI. Manual queuing and merging requires repeated rebases and CI reruns after merging.
Review status The structured API allows agents to directly query, read, and write without parsing natural language. Green checkmarks + text comments, designed for human reading, are difficult for machines to analyze using agents.
Extended Protocol Native MCP protocol + event-driven Automations, agents can directly invoke The REST API + Actions ecosystem is mature but architecturally heavy.
Concurrency performance 22 commits per second, global synchronization <400ms, designed specifically for high-concurrency Agents. With humans pushing dozens of times a day, the agent frequently fails under concurrent loads.
AI Integration Deeply integrated with Cursor, the Agent can directly modify code, update PRs, and push branches. Copilot is an auxiliary plugin; the core workflow remains centered on human operation.
Ecological maturity In the early Beta phase, with a small user base, it has already integrated with Vercel/Depot/Buildkite. The world's largest developer platform, with over 100 million users, and the core of the open-source ecosystem.
Migration costs One-click mirroring of GitHub repositories, two-way real-time synchronization, and the ability to disconnect and run independently at any time. Synchronized as an authoritative data source, no reverse migration from Origin is required.

Origin's application scenarios

  • AI Agent Self-developedThe Agent autonomously completes the entire process from coding and submission to opening a PR and merging in the cloud, delivering a closed-loop solution without human intervention.
  • Large-scale change reviewBreak down the hundreds of file changes generated by the Agent into stacked PRs with dependencies, and reduce the cognitive load of human reviewers by visualizing the dependency graph.
  • Multi-agent concurrent collaborationWhen multiple agents submit PRs to the same repository simultaneously, the merge queue is automatically sorted, conflicts are detected, and resolved by AI to ensure that the backbone is always green.
  • GitHub Disaster Recovery and Progressive MigrationIt uses a mirror layer for daily two-way synchronization with GitHub. If GitHub goes down, it can be disconnected with one click, making Origin an independent and authoritative data source to ensure uninterrupted development.
  • AI-driven delivery across the entire supply chainAutomating the entire process from code submission to AI review, CI testing, and Vercel preview deployment, enabling agent-based delivery without cross-platform jumps.
