What is the K1 visual thinking model?

The k1 Visual Thinking Model is a reinforcement learning AI model from Kimi's k1 series. It natively supports end-to-end image understanding and thought chain technology, extending its capabilities to more fundamental scientific fields beyond mathematics. The k1 model excels in benchmark tests in image understanding, mathematics, physics, and chemistry, surpassing many global benchmark models (such as OpenAI o1, GPT-4o, and Claude 3.5 Sonnet). The k1 Visual Thinking Model can directly process image information to arrive at answers without relying on external OCR or visual models, providing a complete reasoning thought chain and allowing users to see the entire process of the model's thought process. Based on pre-training and reinforcement learning post-training, the k1 Visual Thinking Model optimizes character recognition capabilities, achieving a state-of-the-art score of 903 on OCRBench. Its scores on the MathVista-testmini, MMMU-val, and DocVQA benchmark sets are 69.1, 66.7, and 96.9 respectively, placing it among the world's leading models.

Meanwhile, the Kimi model development team launched Science Vista, a standardized graphical test set for basic science disciplines. It covers mathematical, physical, and chemical image-based questions of varying difficulty, and its distribution closely matches actual user needs. The test set will be made available to the entire industry.

The main functions of the K1 visual thinking model

  • End-to-end image understandingThe k1 visual thinking model can directly process image information input by users, and perform in-depth thinking and analysis without relying on external OCR technology or additional visual models.
  • Reasoning Thinking Chain DemonstrationThe k1 visual thinking model displays the thinking process, namely the chain of thought (CoT), allowing users to see not only the answer but also the logical reasoning process by which the model arrives at the answer.
  • Generalization of basic scientific skills
    • Mathematical abilityThe new K1 visual thinking model unlocks more comprehensive mathematical abilities, including geometry problems, through end-to-end image understanding capabilities.
    • Interdisciplinary abilityThe model's capabilities extend to other fundamental scientific fields such as physics and chemistry, enabling it to understand and solve complex problems in these fields.
  • Real-world adaptabilityIn real-world scenarios with noise, such as dark photos, blurred images, and interference from handwritten text, the k1 visual thinking model has a more significant advantage over the visual language models of OpenAI and Anthropic.
  • General problem-solving skillsThe k1 visual thinking model demonstrates more general capabilities, such as interpreting scientists' manuscripts, making its application scenarios more extensive.

How to use the K1 visual thinking model

  • Download or update the applicationMake sure you have the latest version of the Kimi Smart Assistant app installed on your phone or computer, or visit the Kimi web version.
  • Visit Kimi's Visual Thinking EditionThe K1 visual thinking model has been gradually launched.Latest versionThe "Kimi Smart Assistant" Android and iPhone mobile app and website (kimi.com).Find "Kimi Visual Thinking Edition" on the latest version of the mobile app or the Kimi+ web page.
  • Upload or take a photoUse the camera function in the app or web version to directly capture the image you want to analyze, or upload existing images from your device.
  • Awaiting analysisAfter the image is submitted, the k1 visual thinking model will begin processing the image information, conducting in-depth thinking and analysis.
  • View results and reasoning processKimi Visual Thinking Edition displays the model's Chain of Thought (CoT), allowing users to see the entire process by which the model arrives at the answer.
  • Interaction and feedbackIf you need further explanation or have other questions, interact with Kimi, provide feedback, or ask new questions.

The Challenges of the K1 Visual Thinking Model

  • Generalization abilityThe k1 visual thinking model has room for improvement in its out-of-distribution generalization ability, and it performs poorly when dealing with new types of problems not covered in the training data.
  • Complex Problem SolvingWhen solving more complex problems, the success rate of the k1 visual thinking model is not as high as when dealing with simple problems.
  • Accuracy in noisy scenesIn real-world scenarios with varying levels of noise, the accuracy of the k1 visual thinking model, while having advantages over other models, needs improvement.
  • Multi-round question and answer effectThe performance of the k1 visual thinking model in multi-turn question-and-answer interactions needs improvement, which involves the model's understanding of the context and the logical coherence in continuous dialogue.
