Hunyuan3D-2.1 is an open-source project launched by Tencent's Hunyuan team, focusing on generating high-fidelity 3D assets from images. It features physically based rendering (PBR) material compositing capabilities, generating realistic textures and materials such as metallic reflections and subsurface scattering effects. The model supports multimodal inputs, including text, images, or sketches, and can quickly generate high-quality 3D models. Hunyuan3D-2.1 provides a fully open-source framework, including model weights and training code, facilitating customization and extension by developers.

Main functions of Hunyuan3D-2.1

  • Multimodal input generates 3D modelsIt supports generating high-quality 3D models from text descriptions, single images, or multi-view images. For example, inputting "a rabbit wearing a blue scarf" will generate a corresponding 3D model.
  • High-resolution geometry and texture generationIt adopts a two-stage generation architecture that separates geometry and texture. First, a textureless geometric model is generated, and then a high-resolution texture is synthesized, making the 3D model more detailed in terms of geometric structure and richer in texture color.

Technical Principles of Hunyuan3D-2.1

  • Two-stage generative paradigm:
    • Geometric generation stageAn implicit SDF field is constructed using a conditional diffusion model, and an explicit mesh is output using a differentiable Marching Cubes algorithm. This stage optimizes detailed modeling, resulting in higher mesh accuracy and better topological consistency.
    • Texture synthesis stageA geometry-aware UV mapping network is introduced, combined with the CLIP visual semantic alignment mechanism, to generate high-resolution (4096×4096) PBR (physically based rendering) textures. PBR texture synthesis can generate materials with realistic lighting interactions, such as metallic reflections and subsurface scattering.
  • Multimodal input and cross-modal feature fusionIt supports text, image, or sketch input and uses multimodal alignment technology to fuse features from different modalities to generate 3D assets that are highly consistent with the input conditions.
  • Adaptive Triangle Patch Reduction AlgorithmThe system features an adaptive face reduction function, which can generate hundreds to thousands of triangular faces as needed, optimize the smoothness of geometric edges, and preserve model details to the maximum extent.
  • High performance and compatibilityHunyuan3D-2.1 excels in both generation speed and quality, with its Turbo series models generating high-precision 3D models in under 30 seconds. The generated 3D assets support multiple industry-standard formats such as OBJ, GLB, and USDZ, and can be directly used for 3D printing.
