What is Fengyu?

Fengyu is the world's first full-chain space weather model, jointly launched by the China Meteorological Administration, Nanchang University, and Huawei. Based on an innovative chain-like training structure, the model combines satellite observation data with numerical model data to achieve full-chain coupled simulation of the solar wind, magnetosphere, and ionosphere, breaking through the computational power and real-time response bottlenecks of traditional models. It demonstrates excellent performance in short-term forecasting and extreme event response, with prediction error control at an internationally leading level. The model is widely used in satellite communications, spacecraft orbit management, power protection, and aviation and polar navigation safety assurance, promoting the deep integration of AI and geospace science.

Fengyu's main functions

  • Space Weather Monitoring and Early WarningIt can monitor changes in the solar wind, magnetosphere, and ionosphere in real time and provide early warnings of extreme events that may affect Earth's space environment.
  • Satellite communication and navigation supportBased on accurate predictions of space weather changes, satellite communication interference and navigation errors are reduced, ensuring the stable operation of the satellite system.
  • Spacecraft orbit managementTo optimize spacecraft orbit design, avoid orbital deviations caused by changes in space weather, and ensure the safety of space missions.
  • Power and infrastructure protectionIt can predict events such as geomagnetic storms in advance, helping the power system to take protective measures and reduce the impact on the power grid.
  • Enhancing safety in aviation and polar navigationIt provides space weather information support for aviation and polar navigation, reducing the risks caused by changes in space weather.

Fengyu's technical principles

  • Full-chain couplingThis approach models the solar wind, magnetosphere, and ionosphere separately, and uses a coupled optimization mechanism to simulate information interaction and dynamic response across multiple regions and scales. The chain-like structure realistically reproduces how the solar wind affects the Earth's surrounding environment and the complex interactions between the magnetic field and the ionosphere.
  • Data fusionBy combining real satellite observation data with data generated by our independently developed full-chain space weather numerical model, we have formed a data foundation that complements and corroborates each other.
  • AI technologyIt innovatively integrates the core ideas of artificial intelligence with the mechanisms of Earth system science, and improves the understanding and prediction of space weather change processes based on machine learning algorithms, especially in short-term forecasting and response to extreme events.
  • Predictive performance optimizationAfter a year of predictive performance testing, Fengyu demonstrated excellent 24-hour short-term prediction capabilities in various regions of the solar wind, magnetosphere, and ionosphere. Its prediction error for the total global electron density was basically controlled within 10%, placing it at an internationally leading level.
